How to get to the Hofburg by U-Bahn

Station, line, journey time and exit — the complete guide.

Quick answer

Get off at Herrengasse station (U3 line). From there it is a ~4-minute walk to the Hofburg and the Michaelertor gate.

From Volkstheater (U2, U3) it is about a five-minute walk to Heldenplatz and the Neue Burg — handy if you are coming from that side.

Alternative: station Volkstheater (lines U2, U3).

Note: from 13 July to the end of August 2026 the U3 is split for engineering works — Johnstraße and Schweglerstraße are closed (replacement bus E3). The city-centre section between Simmering and Westbahnhof runs as normal.
