How often does the Vienna metro run?

The Vienna U-Bahn has no minute-by-minute departure timetable: it runs at intervals. So there is nothing to look up — you walk down to the platform and the next train comes. How long you wait depends only on the time of day.

Time windowTime of dayIntervalWhat to expect
05:00 – 06:30Start of service5 – 7 minThe first trains leave the terminus stations just after 5 am. Plenty of space, barely any wait.
06:30 – 09:00Morning peak2–5 minThe densest service of the day: a train every 2 to 5 minutes. The U6 and the U1 are the busiest.
09:00 – 16:00Daytimeabout 5 minA steady 5-minute interval. The most relaxed time of day for sightseeing.
16:00 – 18:30Evening peak2–5 minBack to every 2 to 5 minutes. Karlsplatz, Westbahnhof and Praterstern get crowded.

Good to know: engineering works, big events or incidents can lead to partial closures and replacement services. Check the current alerts before you set off.

Night service and the NightLine buses

24-hour service

Fri/Sat, Sat/Sun and before public holidays

On those nights all five metro lines run right through, every 15 minutes. You need no special ticket: the normal Wiener Linien fare applies.

NightLine

On every other night

From Sunday to Thursday the metro rests between about 00:30 and 05:00. The NightLine buses (route numbers starting with «N») then run about every 30 minutes along the main corridors — and they are included in your normal ticket too.

Trams and buses

A daytime back-up

Trams and buses keep their own hours and some start earlier than the metro. You can change between metro, tram, bus and S-Bahn on the same ticket.

Engineering works

Summer closures

Wiener Linien use the summer months for track and points renewals. Sections are closed and served by replacement buses instead. Any current closure is listed further down this page.

Current closures and replacement services

U3U3: partial closure for track worksuntil end of August 2026

From 13 July until the end of August 2026 the U3 is split in two: it runs between Ottakring and Hütteldorfer Straße, and between Simmering and Westbahnhof. The stations Johnstraße and Schweglerstraße are not served by the U3 during this period; a replacement bus (line E3) operates instead.

Check before you travel

Engineering works, a big match at the stadium or an incident can change the service at short notice. Take a look at the current service status before you set off — especially in summer, when partial closures are common.

Opening hours: frequently asked questions

Service starts at around 05:00. That is when the first trains pull out of the terminus stations; they reach the city centre a few minutes later.

The last trains leave the termini at around 00:30. The exception: on Friday nights, Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays the metro runs all night long.

Not every night — but it does at the weekend. On Friday nights, Saturday nights and before public holidays there is a 24-hour service every 15 minutes on all five lines. On the other nights the NightLine buses run instead.

Every 2–5 min at peak times, about 5 min during the day, 7–8 min from about 20:30, and every 15 min during the weekend night service. You do not need a departure timetable.

No. The same fare applies at night as during the day: a single ticket costs €3.20 and passes stay valid. The NightLine buses are covered by your normal ticket as well.

Yes. From 13 July until the end of August 2026 the U3 is split in two for points renewal; the stations Johnstraße and Schweglerstraße are not served and replacement bus E3 runs instead. You will find the details higher up on this page.
