The U2 line at a glance

The U2 of the Vienna U-Bahn links Seestadt with Karlsplatz — 21 stations over 16.8 kilometres, in about 31 minutes. It opened on 30 August 1980.

The U2 has the strangest back story on the network: its inner-city section along the Zweierlinie originally opened in 1966 as a tram tunnel and was only converted to underground operation in 1980. Today its 21 stations run from Seestadt in Aspern via Stadion, Praterstern and Schottenring to Karlsplatz, serving the whole north-east of Vienna including the trade fair grounds, the WU campus and the Ernst-Happel-Stadion. It is the line of the new districts — and the one currently being rebuilt the most, because it will later branch off towards Matzleinsdorfer Platz.

Did you know?

Since December 2024 the U2 has been the first line in Vienna with platform screen doors: some 200 door modules separate the platform from the track — groundwork for the driverless operation of the future U5. On 19 January 2026 the station Lina-Loos-Platz also opened, the 110th stop on the network; its shell had been sitting finished underground since 2013, waiting for enough people to move in around it.
