How to get to St. Stephen's Cathedral by U-Bahn

Station, line, journey time and exit — the complete guide.

Quick answer

Get off at Stephansplatz station (lines U1, U3). From there the exit brings you out right beside it to St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Stephansplatz is an interchange between the U1 and the U3, so you can reach it from almost anywhere in Vienna with at most one change.

Alternative: station Herrengasse (U3 line).

Note: from 13 July to the end of August 2026 the U3 is split for engineering works — Johnstraße and Schweglerstraße are closed (replacement bus E3). The city-centre section between Simmering and Westbahnhof runs as normal.

Overview

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the symbol of Vienna: a 14th-century Gothic cathedral with its 136-metre south tower (the “Steffl”) and its famous tiled roof. It stands in the middle of the old town on Stephansplatz — and the U-Bahn station of the same name (U1 and U3) is right underneath it. The escalator brings you out practically at the door, so there is barely any walking. The pedestrian streets Graben, Kärntner Straße and Kohlmarkt all start here.
