U4 line — Vienna U-Bahn
Hütteldorf ↔ Heiligenstadt · 20 stations · 16.4 km · about 29 minutes end to end.
The U4 line at a glance
The U4 of the Vienna U-Bahn links Hütteldorf with Heiligenstadt — 20 stations over 16.4 kilometres, in about 29 minutes. It opened on 8 May 1976.
Strictly speaking the U4 is the oldest underground route in service: on 8 May 1976 the first scheduled U-Bahn train in Vienna ran here, two years before the U1. That was possible because the line took over long stretches of the old Wiener Stadtbahn of 1898, whose stations and bridges were designed by Otto Wagner. Across 20 stations it runs from Hütteldorf along the river Wien via Hietzing and Schönbrunn to Karlsplatz, and on along the Danube Canal to Heiligenstadt. No other stretch of line in Vienna is quite so much monument and means of transport at the same time.

The Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) stations Hietzing, Schönbrunn and Kettenbrückengasse are listed monuments — the Hofpavillon in Hietzing was built by Otto Wagner for the Emperor himself. Because the fabric dates from the 19th century, the line has been undergoing a full overhaul for years under the name «NEU4»: new track, new platforms, new systems — while the historic structures are preserved.
