U1 line — Vienna U-Bahn
Oberlaa ↔ Leopoldau · 24 stations · 19.2 km · about 34 minutes end to end.
The U1 line at a glance
The U1 of the Vienna U-Bahn links Oberlaa with Leopoldau — 24 stations over 19.2 kilometres, in about 34 minutes. It opened on 25 February 1978.
The U1 is the oldest purpose-built underground line in Vienna: it opened in 1978 as the first genuinely new tunnel of the network, whereas the U4 was built on top of the old Stadtbahn. Today its 24 stations link Oberlaa in the south with Leopoldau in the north, crossing half the city on the way: Reumannplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, Schwedenplatz, Praterstern and the Donaustadt. It is the classic north–south axis of Vienna’s public transport, and the line most visitors ride first. Its most recent extension took it from Reumannplatz on to Oberlaa in 2017.

Between Donauinsel and Alte Donau the U1 crosses the Danube and the New Danube — one of the few stretches where the window shows water instead of tunnel wall. In summer this is where everyone gets off to swim: Donauinsel and Alte Donau are the two busiest bathing stations in the city.
