The U6 line at a glance

The U6 of the Vienna U-Bahn links Siebenhirten with Floridsdorf — 24 stations over 17.3 kilometres, in about 34 minutes. It opened on 7 October 1989.

The U6 is the odd one out. It is the only line with an overhead line instead of a third rail, its cars (types T and T1) are narrower at 2.65 metres than those of the other lines, and its platforms are lower — so its trains cannot be swapped with the rest of the U-Bahn fleet. The reason lies in its origins: it grew in 1989 out of the Gürtel branch of Otto Wagner’s Stadtbahn and therefore runs above ground for long stretches, on viaducts and in cuttings. Its 24 stations link Siebenhirten in the south via Meidling, Westbahnhof and the Gürtel with Floridsdorf in the north — without ever touching the city centre.

Did you know?

Because much of the U6 runs above ground, it is the only line in Vienna with a view: between Josefstädter Straße and Alser Straße it rolls over the old Stadtbahn viaducts, and the station Josefstädter Straße is still a preserved Otto Wagner station. You can only change from the U6 at four points: Bahnhof Meidling, Längenfeldgasse, Westbahnhof and Spittelau.

Changing lines from the U6

Changing lines is included in any valid ticket — you never pay extra.

Good to know: engineering works, big events or incidents can lead to partial closures and replacement services. Check the current alerts before you set off.
